Early History of Cuban Cadets at The Citadel

On June 29, 1904 The Citadel's Board met again and made the decision to send Major Jesse Colton Lynes to Puerto Rico and Cuba "for the purpose of canvassing for cadets." Major Lynes did travel to Cuba, but not to Puerto Rico, that summer.

Jesse Colton Lynes was born October 6, 1844 in South Carolina to Samuel Lynes and Sarah Dubois Lynes. He attended Kings Mountain Military College, but entered the Confederate States Army before he graduated. After the Civil War, he studied law and lived and studied in Paris. Major Lynes was Professor of Chemistry and Geology at The Citadel from 1901 to 1906.
