Early History of Cuban Cadets at The Citadel

Summer 1904

Asbury Coward, a graduate of The Citadel's Class of 1854, was Superintendent (President) at the time.

The Citadel's Corps of Cadets for the 1904-1905 school year totaled 149 students. The majority of cadets were from South Carolina, with North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee also represented. Eight cadets from Cuba are listed in the 1905 Register in their own freshmen class called the Cuban Section.

Faculty member Maj. Jesse Colton Lynes, Professor of Chemistry and Geology, was sent to Cuba in the summer of 1904 to recruit students to attend The Citadel.
