The Citadel's November 13, 1908 Academic Board Minutes state:

"It was moved and carried that the Academic Board request the Board of Visitors to add Spanish to the curriculum and that members of the First Class excepting those electing Chemistry and Physics to be allowed to substitute it for German in this Class."
