Hardtack from The Citadel Mess Hall, ca. 1891

Hardtack is a dense biscuit made with flour, water, and salt. This hardtack from The Citadel was served in the Mess Hall and has survived to this day without preservatives. The letters S, C, and A were likely added as joke by a former cadet from a 19th century hat insignia for the South Carolina Military Academy, which The Citadel was known as until its name changed in 1910. This item was donated to The Citadel Museum in 1960 by Dr. Alexander S. Salley, Citadel Class of 1892.

Medium: Flour, water, salt, metal

Dimensions: Each of the three pieces are approximately 6 x 4 x 3 cm (L x W x H)
