Wooden gavel used by the Calliopean Literary Society at The Citadel. Donated by Carl F. Myers, Citadel Class of 1914.
The Calliopean Literary Society was formed in 1845, and consisted mostly of students from the low country in South Carolina. Another group at The Citadel was called the Polytechnic Literary Society, which was formed in 1847 and made up mostly of students from the up country. Both societies had meetings where they read and critiqued literature, and discussed current topics.
The societies hosted popular debates which were attended by other cadets and their guests. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, these were some of the most anticipated events for cadets during the school year.
