The Citadel Archives & Museum hold unique and interesting Civil War collections relating to the history of the institution. Names and keywords can be searched in our Online Guide to Collections.

We are actively working to expand our digital collections, and have launched a digital collections website for The Citadel Archives & Museum. Institutional records dating through the Civil War include our Board of Visitor meeting minutes, and our Official Registers.

Other collections include:

Ellison Capers letters to his wife Lottie, 1861-1865

John B. Patrick diaries, 1861-1865, kept while he was a faculty member at the Arsenal Academy in Columbia

Robert Oswald Sams Civil War reminiscences

James Aiken Journals, including his Prisoner of War entries at Johnson's Island, Ohio

As well as select artifacts from The Citadel Museum, including Ellison Capers’s spur and a canteen used by former cadet E. A. Smyth.
