National Park Service: Soldiers & Sailors Database

https://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-soldiers.htm

Use this database to search the name of your Civil War soldier. We recommend searching by their surname and then browsing the results, as many soldiers have initials listed instead of their full first name. This database is very thorough, and includes over 6 million names. When you find your soldier, click on his name to see what information is provided. Most soldiers have their Regiment listed, Company, and rank.

If the Regiment is highlighted, click on it to see a history of that Regiment. These histories usually tell you when and where the Regiment was first assembled, and what significant battles they fought in.
