This multi-volume set is organized into four series:
Series 1: Military operations; contains battle reports from the Union and Confederate armies
Series 2: Prisoners of War and political prisoners
Series 3: Miscellaneous Union correspondence, orders and reports
Series 4: Miscellaneous Confederate correspondence, orders and reports
Some series have both volumes and parts. Indexes are located in the last part of each series, and at the end of a Supplemental publication to the records. The Supplement index is five volumes long, and is located at the end of the Supplemental volumes on the shelf.
