Early History of Chinese Cadets at The Citadel

Wu Ying

Wu Ying attended The Citadel from the fall of 1911 until January of 1912. Before attending The Citadel, he was a student at George Washington University. Mr. Ying appears in GWU's 1911 yearbook, Cherry Tree, as a freshman in the College of Engineering and Mechanical Arts along with two other students from China: U. C. Wong and H. Wing-Yan.

The November 15, 1911 Bulletin, Association of Graduates of The Citadel, states:

"Cadet Wu, the Chinese student, is one of the Boxer Indemnity students who are being educated in American colleges. Last year he attended George Washington University. He is a nephew of former minister Wu, and has been in the United States about ten years, so that he is familiar with English."

The Citadel's 1912 Official Register of Officers and Cadets lists Wu Ying as a member of the Fourth (freshmen) Class, and states that he was honorably discharged on January 8, 1912.
