Early History of Chinese Cadets at The Citadel

Welcome!

Welcome to our research guide for the early history of Chinese cadets at The Citadel.

Wu Ying was the first cadet of Chinese descent to attend The Citadel. Mr. Ying matriculated into the Corps in the fall of 1911, and stayed for one semester. The next cadets from China attended in the 1920s and 1930s, funded by the Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship Program. The Citadel's first cadet graduate from China was Chia-Mei Hu, Class of 1928.

This guide will share information discovered in The Citadel's institutional records, publications, and manuscript collections, and will recommend further resources and research paths.

The Citadel Archives has the goal of lifting up stories and voices from historically underrepresented members of our community. Please email archives@citadel.edu with any questions.
