Timeline 1822-1924

TIMELINE

1822: Denmark Vesey Conspiracy. The South Carolina Legislature passes a law to establish an arsenal and municipal guard to protect the white citizens of Charleston in response.

1829: Original Marion Square campus completed.

1841: Arthur Mitchell joins The Citadel Band as fifer, a position he retains until the Civil War

1842: Founding of The Citadel.

1846: First class of Cadets graduate.

Dec. 20, 1860: South Carolina secedes 

April 12, 1861: Battle of Ft. Sumter, Civil War begins

Feb 1865: Citadel closes its doors as a school during occupation of Charleston

April 16, 1865: Lee surrenders, Civil War Ends 

1865-1875: Citadel acts as a federal garrison during reconstruction 

1870-1880: Peter Conyers is employed as a waiter by The Citadel

1870-1890: Sarah Conyers is employed as a laundress by The Citadel

1882: The Citadel regains its charter.

1882: Arthur Mitchell returns to employment by The Citadel as fifer.

1893: Arthur Mitchell passes away

1900: Peter Conyers passes away

1910: The name of the school changes its name from The Military Academy to The Citadel 

April 6, 1917: The United States joins World War I

November 11, 1918: World War I ends

1918: Construction begins on current The Citadel Campus 

1922: Current campus of The Citadel opens
