Citadel Alumni Genealogical Research Guide

This guide will help researchers use The Citadel Archives collections to conduct genealogical research on Citadel alumni.

Online Guide to Collections

The Online Guide to Collections is a searchable index of the Citadel Archives collections.

From the main interface, you can browse alphabetically or use the search bar on the side of the page

When you pull up a collection, it will give all or some of the following information:

  • Description of the collection
  • Size of collection (in linear feet and boxes/folders)
  • Information about the subject of the collection (example: biographical information for a person)
  • Location in the collection (Accession Number)
  • Link to Finding Aid (if one exists)
  • Related collections

‚ÄčThis is the entry for John Marshall Whilden, a Citadel graduate from the Class of 1861

Using this entry, you can decide whether to contact us to request more information on the material or to make an appointment to view the material in person.

PRO TIP

Not every Citadel alumnus is going to have a separate collection in The Citadel Archives; in fact, it is very rare that they do. If you don't see the name of the person you are looking for listed, it is best to move over to the Digital Collections Website.
