Celebrating its centennial, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is the oldest international affairs think tank in the United States. The Endowment, founded in 1910, is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing cooperation between nations and promoting active international engagement by the United States.

Founded in 1941with the support of Franklin D. Roosevelt (D) and Wendell Willkie (R), this organization supports democratic change and monitors freedom—economic, political, civil liberties, etc.—worldwide. Its country freedom rankings on approximately 200 countries are widely consulted. In 1970 there were only 40 democracies worldwide, but by 2010 there were about 115 out of 200 countries. It’s hard to study international issues without understanding something about these fundamental changes in the international system.
