How does a 3D printer work?
3D printing is a type of additive manufacturing, meaning that you build up an object by creating layer upon layer of material. In the case of our 3D printers, that material is plastic (PLA). These objects are first rendered with software to create a 3D model, and then sent to the 3D printer for printing.
Can I operate a printer myself?
The printers will only be operated directly by staff right now. If you are interested in seeing a 3d printer in action, please contact a staff member for a demonstration.
Who can submit 3D print requests?
3D printing is available to current Citadel affiliates. Academic use will be given priority over other projects. Non-academic print requests have no guaranteed turnaround time and are subject to staff approval.
Is there a cost to use the 3D printer?
There is currently no cost for 3D printing for Citadel affiliates.
How many 3D printers are available?
The Citadel Makerspace currently has two Lulzbot Taz 6 Printers, two Lulzbot Workhorse Printers and one Evolve3D Eve printer.
What are the maximum dimensions in which the 3D printers can print?
Print Area: 280 mm x 280 mm x 250 mm (11.02 in x 11.02 in x 9.8 in)
Print Volume: 19,600 cm3 (1,185 in3) of usable space
How long does it take to print an item?
Build times vary depending on the model. For smaller items, it can take less than hour. For bigger, more complex models, it can take several hours. Using the Cura software, users can get an estimate for how long their model will take to print.
Once the model has been completed, you will be notified via email that it is available for pick up. Files will be printed in the order they are received with priority given to academic and research projects with a deadline; during busy periods, turnaround time may be up to 14 business days. Projects for personal use are not guaranteed a specific turnaround time; larger objects and high resolution prints will take longer to complete.
What material is used by the 3D printer to make the objects?
We offer PLA (polylactic acid) bioplastic, which is suitable for moving parts and and functional prototypes. If you need a different type of material for a project, please contact a Daniel Library staff member.
What happens if I forget to pick up my model?
Models that are left or not picked up after 30 days will be discarded unless prior arrangements have been made with staff.
Can the printers be used for commercial purposes?
The printers are for non-commercial use only. The printers should not be used to print items that are intended for sale.
